Weather: Weather will be seasonal for the end of the week with temps in the upper 30’s and lows in the mid 20’s. Friday will have North winds, but Saturday and Sunday will have east winds. |
| REFUGE / WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA ACTIVITY: |
BIG STONE NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE - LOCATION: ODESSA, MN Reported on December 6, 2012 that on a survey conduced on 12/5 there is still an estimated 3,200 Canada geese on the refuge. This is up 2,200 from last week as a result of thawing this week of the refuge waters. UPPER MISSISSIPPI NWR- LOCATION: WINONA, MN It was reported on an aerial survey conducted on 11/15 that there were 548,000 Ducks, geese and swans between pools 4-14. Of that total, 78,820 birds were Dabbling Ducks, 450,665 were diving ducks, and 11,842 were Canada geese.LAC QUI PARLE REFUGE - WATSON, MN Reported on Decemer 6, 2012 that on a survey on 12/5 that there is an estimated 60,000-70,000 Canada geese on the refuge at this time, up from 58,000 Canada geese on the refuge last week.

Chuck Ellingson: Chuck reported on 12/4 that there is now over 60,000 Canada geese on the refuge and the field hunting has been excellent. he also reported that there is currently no open water remaining in the area with the exception of the refuge. |

Adam reported on 12/4 that there are very strong numbers of Canada geese around the Twin City metro area right now. He also stated that the hunting has been excellent and Adam expects it to stay good as long as the snow doesn’t bury food. Adam is also starting to prepare for spring Snow Goose hunting now so give him a call for a spring hunt! |

| REFUGE / WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA ACTIVITY: |
LAKE ODESSA WMA - LOCATION: WAPELLO, IOWA Reported on December 6, 2012 that on a recent survey conducted on 11/30 Lake Odessa reported having 17,100. Of those ducks, 70% are mallards, and 24% are “other dabblers,” and 6% divers. On the same survey the goose numbers were reported at 2200 Canada, and 0 Snows.RIVERTON WMA - LOCATION: RIVERTON, IOWA Reported on December 6, 2012 that on a recent survey conducted on 11/30 Riverton reported having 25,100 ducks, of which 80% are mallards, and 13% other dabblers. Also reported were 700 Canada geese.
SWEET MARSH WMA - LOCATION: WATERLOO, IOWA Reported on December 6, 2012 that on a survey conducted on 11/30 Sweet Marsh reported having 2,200 ducks with 93% being Mallards, and7% other dabblers. Also counted were 3,200 Canada geese. |

Reported on 12/4 that the 60 degree days this past week have made for some tough duck hunting. He also noted that with a lot of deer hunters out, it was even tougher. Just when you had mallards committed deer hunters shoot. Scott also noted that the fog last Sunday shut things down and they couldn't even see 100 yards till noon, by then the fishermen were out. Scott ended by noting that there are still a lot of ducks and geese around and Maffitt reservoir and Easter Lake are holding quite a few birds. He said it looks like he will be turning to the fields to hunt geese this week. |

North Dakota Waterfowl Migration Report

| WEEKEND WEATHER OUTLOOK: |
A cold front will be hitting North Dakota on Thursday bringing temps down to below freezing for highs, and teens for lows. Strong winds out of the north are also expected. |
| REFUGE / WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT ACTIVITY: |
LAKE ALICE NWR - LOCATION: DEVILS LAKE, ND Reported that during their aerial survey taken the morning of 11/7, that they figure most of the birds have now left the area. They stated that last weekend they experienced 4-5 inches of snow and some freezing temps. Since last Tuesday most of the birds have now left the area. It was noted that there are a few pockets of Snows, and Mallards around, but numbers are now declining from peak. TEWAULKAN NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE – LOCATION: CAYUGA, ND Reported on November 21, 2012 that most of the birds have now moved through the area for the year. They stated that only about 10-15,000 ducks and geese remain at the refuge total. It was also reported that all water is now open, but it will most likely lock back up in ice this weekend. ARROWWOOD WETLAND MANAGEMENT DISTRICT – LOCATION: LYON, ND Reported that as of 11/15 the majority of the waterfowl have now left the area. They stated that a major cold snap last weekend dumped snow on the area and froze most of the water. Arrowwood is now holding 500 Canada geese and 200 Mallards that are still keeping a small section of water open, but other than that and a few other pockets of hearty birds, everything has moved south. |

Brad reported on November 29th that as of 11/13 his season is over for the year. he stated that the cold front moved in over 4 inches of snow and freezing temps and his birds are now southbound. Brad stated that there isn’t a duck around any longer and this will be his last report. |

SAND LAKE NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE - LOCATION: ABERDEEN, SD Reported on December 6, 2012 that as of 11/28 that there are 3,800 Canada geese, down from 7,800 last week. Snow Geese are now completely gone. Ducks are down to 13,000 from 30,000 last week. Total numbers of birds have slowly declined over the past week. Most of the refuge is now frozen with only one small open water area. I spoke with refuge staff on 12/5 and they said that will be the last official report, and most birds have now moved south. WAUBAY NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE - LOCATION: WAUBAY, SD Reported on December 6, 2012 that from 11/29 most all birds have now the area. Some hearty Canada geese are still hanging tough on the little open water remaining, along with a few hundred ducks. Last week around Thanksgiving was the last big push of birds, and now they have moved through according to refuge staff. LAKE ANDES NWR – LOCATION: LAKE ANDES, SD
Reported on December 5, 2012 that there are still a few thousand Canadas, Snows, and Mallards on the refuge right now. With warm temps and little snow cover north of the refuge they still do not feel that have reached the peak migration in their area. |

Bruce reported on 11/27 that the majority of all waterfowl are now gone from his area and have moved south. HORICON MARSH NWR - LOCATION: MAYVILLE, WI Reported on December 6, 2012 that from a recent survey conducted on 11/28 there were 70,038 Canada Geese on the refuge. This is down from 71,056 Canada Geese counted the week before. The Mallard counts were way up at 138,060, which is up from 88,620 the week before NECEDAH NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE – LOCATION: NECEDAH, WI Reported on December 6, 2012 that on a recent survey conducted on 11/28 it was reported that all waterfowl with the exception of 4 Trumpeter swans have left the refuge. CREW MEADOWS NWR - LOCATION: GRANTSBURG, WI Reported on December 6, 2012 that as of 11/29 the area is now frozen and all waterfowl have now left. They noted that a few of the lakes in the area are still open and holding some Canada geese, but the refuge itself is now frozen. |

SQUAW CREEK NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE - LOCATION: MOUND CITY Reported on December 6, 2012 that on a recent a survey conducted on 11/26 there were 255 Canada Geese, 2,600 White Fronted Geese, and 35,000 Snow Geese. There were also 111,727 dabblers with 1,314 Gadwalls, 95,698 Mallards, 5,260 Pintails, and 7,429 Green wing Teal. Also there was 599 Divers counted with nearly all of them being Ringneck Ducks.
SWAN LAKE NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE – LOCATION: SUMNER, MO
Reported on December 6, 2012 that from their recent survey conducted on 12/4 the waterfowl counts were at 25,484 ducks (with no species specific info), 2,600 White Fronted geese, 836 Canada geese, and 35,000 Snow geese.
GRAND PASS CONSERVATION AREA - LOCATION: MIAMI, MO Reported on December 6, 2012 that the current count for ducks is at 80,000 with no species specific information. This is down from last week by about 10,000 birds. |

NORFORK NWR – LOCATION: NORFORK, NE Reported on December 6, 2012 that the migration is now past its peak in their area. They noted that the hunting overall has been very good for the past couple of weeks. They also stated that most of the water is still open in the area, but that may change with the looming cold front. KEARNEY GAME FISH AND PARKS OFFICE- LOCATION KEARNEY, NE Reported on December 6, 2012 that the hunting has slowed way down this past week because of the mild temps, south winds, and birds getting into a pattern. The winds are going to switch out of the north Thursday and hopes are high with a new cold front that more birds will begin arriving. LINCOLN GAME FISH AND PARKS OFFICE - LOCATION: LINCOLN, NE Reported on 11/29 that there is good number of waterfowl around right now and the hunting has been very successful for the last few weeks. Some birds are becoming stale with nice weather, and the migration has not yet peaked. |

Kalend reported on 12/5 that this week in centeral Nebraska there continues to be a slow trickle of puddle ducks (including mallards, widgeon and gadwalls) as well as some bigger flocks of lesser Canada geese into the area. With the continued warm temps from last weekend, the hunting has been moderate this week. Although the hunters have not been taking limits of birds every day, the afternoon hunts have been productive in the fields on geese. This weekend there is an expected cold front moving through the region from the north which should push some new birds down into the area and the hunting in Nebraska should pick up dramatically. |

Manitoba Waterfowl Migration Report

| CANADIAN WILDLIFE SERVICE REPORTS: |
DAUPHIN LAKE FIELD OFFICE - LOCATION: DAUPHIN LAKE, MB Refuge officials reported that 95% of the waterfowl has now migrated out of the area at this point and that most of the smaller water is now frozen over. They feel that the season appears to be over in there region for another year. BRANDON FIELD OFFICE - LOCATION: BRANDON, MANITOBA Reported that most all of the smaller bodies of water are now frozen over in the area as well as a few of the bigger lakes. They stated that the Schaol Lakes are now starting to freeze over as well and they saw a lot of migrating flocks of waterfowl move south last weekend.
OAK HAMMOCK MARSH FIELD OFFICE - LOCATION: STONEWALL, MB Reported that on 10/30 that they have ceased there official waterfowl counts for the year but they noted that last Fri / Sat they saw a major migration of waterfowl out of the area, moving south due to a cold snap in the temps. They stated that most of the smaller waters now have up to 2 inches of ice on them and although there are still decent numbers of Canada geese and late season mallards in the area, most of the Snow geese and other ducks have now moved south as of last week. They feel the peak of the migration is well south of them now and only the hardcore birds are left in the area.

Craig reported on 11/21 that his season is over for the year now and they are all iced up. Craig stated that overall the duck hunting was down from previous years but better than last year. Craig also stated that the Canada goose hunting was excellent again this year as it always is and the Snow goose hunting was very good this year due to the high number of juvenile snows that came through the area. Craig is hoping that the excellent Snow goose hunting will carry over into the upcoming spring season. |

Judy reported on 10/23 that they received a fresh snowfall this morning and it seems as if most of the Snow geese have moved out of the area. Judy also reported that there are still plenty of mallards, and Canada geese around to be hunted, and northern birds still appear to be arriving. |

| Daryl reported on 12/4 that overall the 2012 waterfowl season in the Interlake Region went very well this year. Daryl stated that they had great duck numbers early in the season and the Snow goose numbers were very good as well. Daryl stated that they did experience a mid season lull in early October but then ended with a bang when the northern mallards showed up at the end of October along with the greater Canadas. Overall Daryl was very pleased with the hunting this past fall and looks forward to an excellent year in 2013! |

Temps will only reach the mid 30’s until the end of the week with lows in thehigh 20’s. Friday may have a wintry mix of precipitation but the reaminder of the weekend looks fair with temps nearing 40 and lows in the high 20’s. |
| CANADIAN WILDLIFE SERVICE REPORTS: |
WADENA FIELD OFFICE - LOCATION: QUILL LAKES REGION Reported on November 22, 2012 that at this point winter is now setting in. They stated that all of the bodies of water in the area are now completely frozen over and most all of the waterfowl have moved south for the year.
LAST MOUNTAIN LAKE FIELD OFFICE - LOCATION: LAST MTN LAKE REGIO Refuge staff reported on 10/31 that the majority of the water has frozen over now and with the exception of a few stubborn flocks of Snow geese still hanging around, most waterfowl have now moved south for the year. They feel the season is pretty much wrapped up in their region.
WEYBURN FIELD OFFICE - LOCATION: WEYBURN, SK Refuge officials reported on 10/31 that there are still good huntable numbers of birds around, with much of the sheet water now frozen, but the big lakes still open the birds are concentrated but still hanging in there. It was noted that not many snow geese remain in the area as of now, but many ducks and Canada geese are.

Mike reported on 11/15 that he has wrapped upthe season in Canada now and had one the best seasons ever in Canada this year. Mike stated that he witnessed more Mallards than he had ever seen up there before. Mike returned home on 10/30 and is now guiding hunters in Washington at Pacific Wings. |

Matt reported on 11/21 that they have now moved south for the year and overall it was another excellent year of waterfowl hunting in Saskatchewan. He stated that the Snows arrived early this year and the fields were harvested early as well and were ready for the migrating birds. He noted that the hunting for Snows was great through October 8th. Then he stated that the hunting slowed down a bit from Oct 8 – Oct 20th. After the 20th Matt reported that the field Mallard and lessor Canada goose hunting was awesome. He noted that they didn’t see the greater Canadas show up until the end of October this year when they were pulling out of the area. Matt stated that his scouts in central Saskatchewan have reported this week that they have a decent amount of snow cover and ice across the area and there are still a few late season greater Canada geese around but overall the season is pretty much over for the year. |

| Ryan reported on 10/30 that there are still some snow geese, specks and Canada geese around. Duck numbers are dwindling but a few are hanging in there. Ryan stated he is now in the southern part of SK because of a freeze up in the northern region. |
