 | About The Outfitter: Tom and Judy Usunier have operated Big Grass Outfitters for the past 15 years. In 2001 they purchased the first bear allocation business which offered great colored bears and huge bruins of Manitoba. Our Philosophy: “Hunters arrive as clients and leave as friends” holds true in our hunts supporting stats of 65% return clientele. Knowledge of our bear hunting areas continues to produce the 90-95% opportunity and the 75% color phase of both our spring and fall bear areas.
Great local populations and center of the flyway offer good shooting for geese and many different species of ducks. The latest waterfowl equipment, knowledge of the birds and good relationship with local farmers gives opportunity to hammer these birds hard.
Prime private leased agricultural land offering hunts for mature bodied whitetail from heated stands in November in Manitoba has produced 135-145bc class whitetail over past 12 years.

Trophy Manitoba Bear Hunts
In 2009 largest bear 20 12/16bc and a blonde bear was taken each week of hunting!!! We have photos to prove it. In 2007 Big Grass Outfitters harvested the largest black bear in Manitoba - 22 4/16bc. Still sitting largest COLOR bear in Boone and Crocket in the WORLD. High Color phase Black bears are abundant in the spring, starting up during the last week of April and running the entire month of May, along the shores of Lake Manitoba and spreading over an area of 20 miles by 60 miles is where Big Grass Outfitters hunt. Asessippi Provincial Park, shores of Assiniboine River and rural Manitoba are where the fall hunts take place. Expect to hunt over well established bait sites, used over the past 10 years by our hunters. Each year we add some new ones as well. This offers our hunters an excellent opportunity to harvest good quality bears.
A typical day in bear camp would be getting up for coffee, oj and muffins, viewing photos of harvested bears from the night before. Then later that day, sitting down to a good home cooked brunch, before leaving for the stand between 1-3 pm, depending on where you will be hunting. Tom always does a “Bear 101” for all hunters prior to heading to the stand, to answer all last minute questions. REMEMBER no question is TOO small. Down time is used for shooting the bows and prior to hunt the rifles are all shot to make sure they are on the X. You will be into your stand no later than 4 pm and will hopefully have a good Manitoba bruin harvested with a good clean kill shot before dark. Your bear will be retrieved, and hung on the POLE over night and by 8am Judy will take photos of your trophy, the guides will skin and then freeze your hide for the long trek back home or to our taxidermist. | |

HUNT 2: Manitoba Waterfowl Hunts
Waterfowling hunting adventures- 2.5 and 5 days for snows, blues, Canadas, and ducks in Prairie pothole region. Hunting from dressed Final Approach blinds, over Avery and Big Foot Full body duck and goose decoys gives most hunters opportunity of good shooting during a morning or afternoons spread. With that being said averages of 1.5 and 8.3 shells per bird always is the telling factor of what numbers of birds are harvested. But in the END it is the Birds with their landing gear down that really is the highlight of the HUNT. | |

HUNT 3: Manitoba Whitetail Deer Hunts
Large bodied whitetail hunted on private leased farmland is what Manitoba offers for a deer hunt. We are small operators with only 10 hunts sold on this private farm land. Managing the herd to grow good mature animals is what Big Grass offers. Our heated tower stands take the edge off of the -5 to-10F temps in November while hunting deer. | |

Lodging And Meals:
All lodging and meals are included in the hunts. Spring bear is at our out camp where showers are hot, beds are comfortable and meals are home cooked but no 5 star. Big Grass Log Lodge and Cabins accommodates the fall bear, waterfowl and deer clients a little different scene but where showers are still hot, beds are comfortable and home cooked meals. Some come back for the Breakfast hash browns or the corn bread, some come for the Chocolate cream pie but most come for those stories and comradery before and after the hunt. |
