FEATURED HUNTER OF THE WEEK FOR OCTOBER 6, 2014 |
 | Colton Wientjes Watertown, SD
Hunting Companion: Kirby - Black Lab Favorite Type Of Hunting: Waterfowl Hunting Member Of: Dakota Sportsmen Inc |
BIO OF HUNTER:
I have been addicted to hunting since I watched my grandpa and brothers bring wild game home when I was way to young to hunt, or even thing about hunting. I have been hunting since I was 12 here in north eastern SD. I have been on some unforgettable hunts for waterfowl, from piles of snow geese to dove hunts that we shoot a 5 man limit in 45 minutes. I was born with the drive to hunt thanks to my older brothers. Nothing is better than watching a flock of mallards or geese feet down coming into the decoys, knowing you fooled the whole flock of them. |
 | MOST RECENT MEMORABLE HUNT:
Recently, I found a wheat field here in north eastern SD that the birds were hitting on a regular basis. It was tough to get all the brothers together for a hunt, but we got 3 of us together and our Dad to hunt with us that Sunday morning. We didn't make a huge dent in the population that morning but we managed to get 10 ducks and 18 geese with one of the wearing a federal band. But the best part of the hunt was comradery of all us brothers and father during the hunt. I wouldn't trade it for any hunt I have been on! |

BIO OF HUNTER: I started hunting waterfowl my senior year in high school and became instantly addicted. It is an obsession that rolls around every fall. | Dan Wennerlind Castle Rock, CO
Hunting Companion: Brandy- Chesapeake Bay Retriever Favorite Type Of Hunting: Waterfowl Hunting Member Of: NRA, D. U. Pheasants Forever, Ultimate Waterfowlers Challenge |
BIO OF HUNTER: I grew up hunting with my father in western Minnesota for ducks, geese and pheasants on Marsh Lake. After graduating with a degree in Wildlife Mngmt I got my first guiding gig at a duck club in Fergus Falls, MN. From there, I became a waterfowl hunting guide every fall for the next few years. Then a light bulb went off and I started a company called HuntTheNorth.com. This has allowed me to travel the continent hunting with the top outfitters across the country as well as hunting most all species of game- big and small and pursue the passion that I grew up with. My true passion is bird hunting and watching the dogs work- whether that be pheasants in cattails or ducks over a marsh. Working and handling the dogs is just as much fun for me a s pulling the trigger. I believe in the true ethics of hunting and eating everything that you shoot. As well as honoring the game we harvest. I believe the ability to hunt is a true gift from the Lord and should not be taken for granted or wasted by not utilizing the game harvested. I recently started a new challenge for duck and goose hunters called the Ultimate Waterfowlers Challenge and am very excited to see it take off and add to the enjoyment of the sport for many other die hard waterfowl hunters! For more details on that see: http://www.waterfowlerschallenge.com/ |

 | Cole Niebauer Stuart, Nebraska
Hunting Companion: Maggie - Lab Retriever Cross Favorite Type Of Hunting: Big Game- Elk Hunting Member Of: UNL Wildlife Club, UNL Archery Club |
BIO OF HUNTER: When I was little I could always remember sitting with my dad while archery hunting whitetails. One time he let me rattle for him. I called in a little 4x4 buck. From that moment on I was hooked! When I turned 12, I took my hunter education and bow hunter education courses. My passion for the outdoors has carried on and I am a certified hunter education instructor in the state of Nebraska. I am also working on getting certified as a bow hunter education instructor. My girlfriend took one of my hunter education classes and passed. I took her back home for the late season where she could shoot a doe with a rifle. With many early mornings and walking the Sandhills she ended up with a 3 1/2 year old doe. I couldn't be any more proud not only as a boyfriend but a mentor and an instructor. Hunting has been and will be a big part of my life. I am currently attending the University of Nebraska-Lincoln majoring in Fisheries and Wildlife. I plan to become a wildlife biologist, so that I can further my passion and promote hunting to the generations to come. |
 | MOST MEMORABLE RECENT HUNT:
My most memorable hunt was a archery elk hunt I took with my dad to Colorado in 2013. This was a self guided hunt on private land with one of our friends who has family in that area of Colorado. This was a 5 day trip over Labor Day weekend. We hunted hard once the season opened up until the last day of the trip. No game was harvested but just the experience, made it all worth it. This hunt meant a lot to me because it was with my dad. He is the reason I |
am hunting today. We have talked about archery hunting elk for years and this was a great opportunity for both of us.
NEXT HUNT PLANNED: Nebraska firearms season with my girlfriend |

FEATURED HUNTER OF THE WEEK FOR JUNE 9, 2014 |
 | Kelly Warren Portland, Oregon
Hunting Companion: Grizz (Black Lab) Favorite Type Of Hunting: Waterfowl & Big Game Member Of: Ducks Unlimited, Delta Waterfowl, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation |
BIO OF HUNTER:
I started hunting waterfowl with my dad and grandpa before I could walk. Both of them taught me the biology of the game we hunted and that it is a hunter’s responsibility to gain knowledge of the animals we hunt and beyond all else show them proper respect. These lessons were a foundation for my hunting career. I am fortunate to hunt an average about 50+ days and my passion for waterfowl hunting continues to grow. Big game archery hunting has been something that peaked my interest later in life but I am finding just as addicting. A significant part of hunting for me is about the challenge. The challenge of getting game as close as possible for a clean shot, using calls that you practice religiously, testing your body physically in the terrain that your quarry live. Other important aspects of hunting to me are family, friends, memories, the rewards, and experiences learned to be a better hunter. I have spent most of my years in college and graduate school researching, learning and understanding game and game management. Interaction with these game species has made me appreciate these species more and it is now my career to manage many of these species. Nearly all aspects of my life carryover into hunting; my job as a wildlife coordinator, wildlife photography, managing family property for waterfowl, training for hunting, and much more. I have been on waterfowl hunts for 25+ years and have been hunting big game for 15. My passion for the outdoors and hunting is only growing! |
 | Most Recent Memorable Hunt: This was one of the worst duck years on record in Oregon. However there were a few hunts that were the exception. The most memorable hunt of the year was during an ice storm with my Dad. I split a 20 yard hole in five inch thick ice with a maul, set up a few dozen decoys and the mallards came. This was the day we had waited for all year. They decoyed beautifully in small groups, pairs, and singles. The day ended with fourteen mallards and a goose. The reason this hunt sticks out is because of the hours of ice breaking and because a memorable hunt with Dad can't be beat! |
Next Hunt Planned: Archery Elk Hunt In August! |
