Illinois Spring Snow Goose Report
|
| WEEKEND WEATHER OUTLOOK: |
Highs: In southern Illinois expect high temps to maintain in the mid 70s through the weekend.
Lows: Expect a low of 65 degrees each night through the weekend as well.
Precipitation: Skies will be overcast through the weekend with a 70% chance of T-storms expected on Friday a 50% chance of T-storms on Saturday and a 40% chance of T-storms on Sunday. |
REFUGE / WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA ACTIVITY: |
UNION COUNTY STATE WILDLIFE AREA - JONESBORO, ILLINOIS
Reported that as of March 3, 2011 they have not had what they would consider huntable numbers of snow geese in the area for about 10 – 14 days now. They stated that they have seen a few high flying flocks moving through the area but no major concentrations on the ground for some time now. They feel that the migration has moved through the area for the year now. |
HORSESHOE LAKE STATE REFUGE - MILLER CITY, ILLINOIS Reported that as of March 3, 2011 they currently do not have any snow geese sitting on the refuge. They stated that they still have a few Canada geese and a few ducks hanging around but the snow geese have moved on. |
CYPRESS CREEK NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE - ULLIN, ILLINOIS Reported that as of March 3, 2011 they still have between 500 – 1,000 snow geese using the refuge but that is down from over 5,000 about 10 days ago. They also have not seen many new geese arriving and feel that the snow goose migration has moved north now, with a few stragglers still left to come. |

LAST UPDATED: MARCH 10, 2011 James Frerking reported that this past weekend they started pulling their spreads for the year but still had decent opportunities at shooting the late juvenile flocks that continued to migrate north. James stated that in that 3 day span they probably saw a total of about 1,000 geese migrating north so there are not many geese left in the southern Illinois region but he has still heard a few reports of geese still staging in Arkansas. James said overall they had a great year and is now planning to head to NW Missouri / SW Iowa for a “Fun” hunt with the guys this weekend. He said they are pretty much all packed up now for the year in Illinois. |

LAST UPDATED: MARCH 10, 2011 Jim Knope reported that in southern Illinois the season is officially over for them. He stated that last weekend they started to pull the spreads. Jim noted that overall they had what he would consider an “Average “ year but what was nice about this spring was the 12 day stretch of good weather they had where the hunting was very good for those 12 days and they shot over 400 geese in that time frame. Jim said that at this point there may be a few straggler juvenile flocks coming through but he does not feel there are huntable numbers left in southern Illinois. |

Missouri Spring Snow Goose Report

| WEEKEND WEATHER OUTLOOK: |
Highs: In north west Missouri expect high temps to maintain in the low to mid 60s through the weekend.
Lows: Expect a low temps to slowly rise from 41 degrees Friday night, up to 49 degrees by Sunday night.
Precipitation: Skies will be overcast through the weekend with a 60% chance of T-storms expected on Friday and then a 20% - 30% chance of rain showers expected for the rest of the weekend. |
REFUGE / WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA ACTIVITY: |
SQUAW CREEK NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE - MOUND CITY, MO
Reported that as of March 28, 2011 that the numbers of snow geese on the refuge dropped down to 2,113 from 92,347 light on the refuge on March 21st. That number was down from 418,000 from their last count on March 17th. At this point they feel that the main migration has moved through the region for the year. |
SWAN LAKE NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE - CAINSVILLE, MO Reported that as of March 24, 2011 they were only holding about 300 snow geese on the refuge and only a few small scattered flocks left in the region. That number is down from their last count of 1,500 snow geese on March 15th – 19,500 on March 10th and 128,000 on March 3rd. At this point the main migration has pushed through the area for the year. |
GRAND PASS CONSERVATION AREA - MIAMI, MO
Reported that as of March 17, 2011 they are holding about 1,000 snow geese in the refuge area and another 3,000 snow geese in the adjacent areas. This number is down from 300,000 snow geese reported on March 3, 2011. They reported that hunter success has been poor this past week and there is no draw to hunt the Grand Pass Conservation Area at this time. |

Scott Robinson reported that they finally wrapped up the spring season in NW Missouri last Sunday. Scott stated that they had a banner spring season all the way till the end. Scott noted that the last weekend the hunting was tough as the geese from the refuge were most all feeding in Nebraska but up until that point they had great success throughout the spring and they averaged 30 – 40 geese per field each day the week prior. Scott did note that as they pulled out of the area, there was still a massive flock of juvenile geese still in Missouri. |

Shawn Eldredge reported that in NW Missouri they are still seeing small pods of juvenile geese scattered throughout the area but he has finished up his spring hunts in NW Missouri for the year at this point. Shawn noted that there are not a lot of geese sitting on the Squaw Creek NWR at this time, maybe a couple thousand but they are seeing the smaller flocks sitting on pasture ponds and sheet water in the area. Shawn said overall they had an excellent spring season and feels that at this point there are no longer any huntable numbers of light geese remaining in NW Missouri. |

Matt Kostka reported that this past week the hunting slowed down a bit as there was a major spring snow storm that went through the Dakota’s but the area they have been hunting in north central ND did not receive much snow as most of that went south. Matt stated that before the storm they had been hunting near the Jamestown area and the hunting had been very productive all last week. Matt reported that there are still good numbers of light geese scattered across the state and although the main migration of snows has now moved up into Canada, he expects the next 10 days will continue to be productive as they are starting to see more and more juvenile birds showing up in the area now as the weather calms down and the birds start moving north again. |

Nebraska Spring Snow Goose Report

Highs: In central Nebraska expect high temps to be in the upper 50s to low 60s through the weekend.
Lows: Expect a low temps to slowly rise from 38 degrees Friday night, up to 45 degrees by Sunday night.
Precipitation: Skies will be overcast through the weekend with a 20% chance of rain showers expected on Friday and a 10% chance of rain showers expected for the rest of the weekend. |

Reported that as of March 24, 2011 that from all reports across the state, most of the snow geese have now moved north through the state. They noted that there are still some smaller flocks of stragglers still moving through the state but no major concentrations have been reported for over a week now. |

Reported that as of March 24, 2011 that although there are still a few small flocks moving up from the south each day, they have not seen any decent sized flocks of snow geese in the area for over a week now. They also noted that they did not see any geese migrating back south from the storm that went through South Dakota earlier in the week. They feel that the migration has passed through the area for the year at this point.

Kalend McCurdy reported that since last weekend the majority of the snow geese in south eastern Nebraska have migrated north out of the area and the hunting has been very slow since last weekend. Kalend elected to pull the plug on the hunting in Nebraska earlier this week and make the move up into South Dakota to keep up with the birds again for the upcoming week. |

JJ Randolph reported that last week from Tuesday through Thursday they wrapped up the spring season in SE Nebraska. They stated that they did have a few small flocks of juvenile geese decoy well those days but after last Thursday they have not seen hardly any snow geese left in the region. JJ also noted that there are still decent flocks of juvenile geese on Squaw Creek NWR but for whatever reason those geese usually do not come through his area so he is packed up for the year and back home in Wyoming. JJ said they had a great season while it lasted and he is ready for a little R and R before he starts up his spring fly fishing operation in Wyoming. |

Larry Frimann reported that he wrapped up his spring season today. He stated that they have been seeing a few small flocks move through his area on the eastern border of Nebraska each day this week and they have still been shooting in the teens for numbers of geese harvested each day but they have been seeing less and less flocks moving through the area each day and it takes all day to shoot the two or three flocks that they do see. Larry reported that overall they had an excellent spring season averaging about 25 geese per day from his main spread. |

Highs: In east central South Dakota expect a high of 45 degrees through Saturday and then a jump up to 52 degrees on Sunday.
Lows: Expect a low temps to be in the mid 30s through the weekend.
Precipitation: Skies will be overcast through the weekend with a 70% chance of rain showers expected on Friday and a 20% chance of rain showers expected for the rest of the weekend. |

SAND LAKE NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE - ABERDEEN, SD
Reported that as of April 21, 2011 although they got about 6 – 7 inches of snow earlier in the week, most of that has already melted off and it did not do much for bringing back any snow geese into the area from the north. They stated that it has been at least a couple weeks now since they have seen any decent numbers of snow geese in the area and although there are still some small scattered, isolated flocks throughout the region there really are not any huntable numbers left that they have had reports of. |
LAKE ANDES NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE - LAKE ANDES, SD
Reported that as of April 7, 2011 that they have no snow geese on the refuge at this time and that they have not had any significant numbers of snow geese in the area for a couple weeks now. They feel that at this point the migration is over in their area for the spring. |
MADISON COUNTRY WETLAND DISTRICT - SOUTH EAST, SD
Reported that as of April 14, 2011 that the majority of the snow geese have now vacated the area. They stated that there have been reports of some smaller late migrating juvenile geese still staging in the Lake Thompson region but for the most part there are very few snow geese left in the southern half of the state now. |

LAST UPDATED: APRIL 21, 2011 Adam Johnson reported that although he wrapped up the season a while back he had a couple of his guides who stayed on and hunted through this week up in North Dakota and had excellent success in the snow storm earlier this week. With Adam's reports from this past week he still feels there are huntable pockets of snow geese from north central South Dakota, up into Canada now. Adam felt overall the season was an excellent success and is already excited for next spring! |

LAST UPDATED APRIL 7, 2011 Brian Cahalen reported that they finally packed it in for the year last weekend, wrapping up the season in central South Dakota. Brian said at that point the main push of adult birds had moved north into North Dakota. He stated that they had very good luck the last few days hunting the juvenile flocks lagging behind. Overall Brian reported that they started out in NE Arkansas and had a very good season down there. They then moved up into central Missouri where the hunting was what he still considered good and then when they got to SD he stated that he saw the largest flocks of snow geese he has ever seen- extending for miles in the skyline which made for some tough hunting until the big flocks were able to move out of the area. |

LAST UPDATED: APRIL 21, 2011 Josh Kiesow reported that earlier this week they got hit with another spring storm bringing with it 1 -2 more inches of snow but he said that melted fairly quickly. Josh also stated that at this point there is not many snows left in South Dakota that he has seen but once in awhile he stumbles accross a flock like he did this morning when he found a decent size flock of about 1,500 snows in a little WMA Area. However Josh noted they are few and far between now as those are the first snow geese he has seen in about 2 weeks. |

Reported that as of April 21, 2011 that although they did get hit with a little bit of the recent winter storm earlier this week, it did not do much as far as pushing any of the snow geese back into the area. They stated that they received about 1 – 2 inches of snow and that is melting quickly and they have not seen much of any snow geese in the area now for over a week. |
ARROWWOOD NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE - JAMESTOWN, ND
Reported that as of April 21, 2011 they got about 6 – 8 inches of snow from the storm earlier in the week and with the cooler temps it has taken a few days for that to melt off. They reported that they did not see much of a reverse migration due to the weather though and that most of the snow geese have already migrated north and there are not too many left in the area at this point in time. |
LAKE ALICE NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE - DEVILS LAKE, ND
Reported that as of April 21, 2011 they are still seeing very good numbers of snow geese in the area. They stated that there are decent sized flocks currently feeding in the Leads / Cando area and the flocks are still pretty big. They also noted many flocks moving east and west feeding in area fields at this point as well. They noted that they did not get hit with the winter storm earlier in the week as it went to the south of them and they don’t have much for snow left in the area besides some drifts in the tree rows now. They also stated that all of the smaller lakes and sloughs are pretty open now although the big lake is still frozen over and the roads are very muddy and tough to get around still. |

Canada Spring Snow Goose Report

Southern Saskatchewan
Highs: In southern Saskatchewan expect a high temp of 50 degrees through Saturday and then a jump up to 59 degrees for Sunday.
Lows: Expect low temps in the upper 20s to low 30s through the weekend.
Precipitation: Skies will be overcast through the weekend with a 20% chance of rain showers expected on Friday and a 60% chance of rain showers on Saturday. Sunday should be clear and sunny.

Highs: In southern Manitoba expect high temps to climb through the weekend from 48 degrees on Friday, up to 54 degrees by Sunday.
Lows: Expect low temps to climb from 30 degrees on Friday night, up to 39 degrees on Sunday.
Precipitation: Skies will be overcast through the weekend with a 40% chance of rain showers expected on Friday and Saturday and then a 50% chance of rain showers expected on Sunday. |

Reported that as of April 21, 2011 they were holding very good numbers of snow geese last weekend in the area especially around the Yellow Grass region to the NW of Weyburn. They reported that this week the majority of the geese have now continued their migration north and reports are now coming in of huge concentrations of snow geese showing up in the Saskatoon area. They did note that all of the lakes in the area are still frozen over and that to the north there is still a considerable amount of snow left in the fields but they are expecting some rain and warmed temps in the forecast and expect they will be seeing smaller flocks of snow geese migrating through the region over the next couple weeks from the states. |
LAST MTN LAKE FIELD OFFICE - LAST MTN LAKE REGION

Reported that as of April 21, 2011 they have just started seeing the first flocks of snow geese showing up in the area this past week. They stated that last week at this time there were only a couple of small flocks in the area and this week now they are seeing constant flocks flying over all day. They also reported that although most of the lakes in the area are still frozen over, they could open up any day now and they smaller waters are opening up and they are having some flooding issues in some areas. They also noted that the snow is about 80% melted now and they roads are very wet and tough to get around at this point. |

Reported that as of April 21, 2011 they still have cold temps with light snow and ice covering the area. They stated that there are some light geese starting to show up in the SW region of the province now but they have not seen the major migration of geese in the area quite yet. They are hoping for warmer temps next week which will lead to more birds moving into the area. |

LAST UPDATED: APRIL 21, 2011 Ryan Marsh reported that they are finally starting to see some huntable numbers of light geese showing up in north central Saskatchewan now but Ryan says they are sure taking their time. Ryan said they just started up their hunts this week and so far with the birds still to the south it has been a little slow. Ryan is expecting the hunting to continue to pick up as the weather warms in the area and the birds start to move north. |

LAST UPDATED: APRIL 21, 2011 Craig Henry reported that they are thick in the snow geese right now. He stated that more and more juvenile geese are moving into the area as the adults aer starting to move north. Craig said the hunting this past week has been exceptional and they are getting very close to breaking the 100 bird mark each day but just haven't been able to hit the century marker quite yet. Craig expects the hunting to be consistant through the first week in May when they will be wrapping things up. He stated they do have a few last minute openings if anyone is able to make a short notice trip. |
