We will be utilizing updated weekly reports from top spring snow goose hunting guides and outfitters across the Midwest as well as local refuges in each state. Arkansas Spring Snow Goose Report

WEEKEND WEATHER OUTLOOK

In northeastern Arkansas expect a high of 66 with a low of 42 and cloudy skies with E winds at 5 to 10 mph. The high on Saturday is expected to be 59 with a low of 39 and sunny skies with NNE winds at 15 to 25 mph. Expect a high of 64 on Sunday with a low of 54 and cloudy skies with SE winds at 10 to 15 mph.

REFUGE / WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA ACTIVITY

CACHE RIVER NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE- COTTON PLANT, AR

Reported on 3-6 that they still have some Snow geese in and around the area. Staff stated that the migration has moved along rather quickly this year due to it being a mild winter. Staff finished by saying that the season seems to be all but over here.

HOLLA BEND NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE – DARDANELLE, AR

Reported on 3-6 that the season has come to an end. Staff stated that there are a few small pockets of snow geese around, but not many.

John reported on 2-28 that hunting has been very good so far this spring in Arkansas. He stated that good weather and the mild temps have had the birds moving hard and feeding heavy. John finished by saying that they plan on staying in the area for a little bit longer before heading up to South Dakota to hunt there for a while.

Nick reported on 2-28 that they just finished up their season in Arkansas this week. He stated that the Arkansas season was tough at the beginning as they had a significant snow storm that pushed the geese way South. Nick also stated that when the migration got back to the area they pretty much blew right through the area and to the extreme northern parts of the state. He finished by saying that even with all of that hunting was very good and there are still good pockets of Juvies in Aransas, but you have to put on a lot of miles to find them.

Illinois Spring Snow Goose Report

WEEKEND WEATHER OUTLOOK

On Friday in southern Illinois expect a high of 67 with a low of 36 and cloudy skies with a ESE wind at 5 to 10 mph. Saturday’s high is expected to be 56 with a low of 34 and partly cloudy skies with NNE winds at 10 to 20 mph. Expect a high of 63 on Sunday with a low of 51 and mostly cloudy skies with SE winds at 10-15 mph.

REFUGE / WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA ACTIVITY

UNION COUNTY STATE WILDLIFE AREA – JONESBORO, ILLINOIS

Reported on 2-28 that in the most recent survey there were roughly 7,550 Snow geese in the area. Staff stated that with the mild winter all around the birds are pushing north rather quickly this year with limited snow to hold them up.

HORSESHOE LAKE STATE REFUGE – MILLER CITY, ILLINOIS

Reported on 2- 28 that in the most recent survey there were 6,400 Snow geese counted in the aerial survey. Staff stated that with the lack of snow in the upper Midwest this year, the migration is moving early.

CARLYLE LAKE WILDLIFE REFUGE – VANDALIA, ILLINOIS

Reported on 2-28 that in the most recent survey that was conducted there were 6,450 Snow geese in the area. Staff stated that the migration has been moving earlier and quicker than normal with the mild winter.

Missouri Spring Snow Goose Report

WEEKEND WEATHER OUTLOOK

In northwestern Missouri expect a high of 53 with a low of 26 and a 60% chance of rain with NNW winds at 20 to 30 mph. Saturdays high is expected to be 47 with a low of 37 and mainly cloudy skies and E winds at 10 to 20 mph. Expect a high of 56 on Sunday with a low of 48 and steady rain turning into thunderstorms and SE winds at 20 to 30 mph.

REFUGE / WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA ACTIVITY

SQUAW CREEK NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE – MOUND CITY, MO

Reported on 3-20 that in the most recent survey conducted on 3-19 there were 13,240 Snow geese on the refuge at the time of the count. Up from 4,490. Staff stated that with the lack of snow and ice and warmer than normal temperatures birds are grouped up and migrating rapidly this spring. Staff finished by saying that with the weather up north this weekend and early next week they could possible see an uptick in numbers again.

SWAN LAKE NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE – CAINSVILLE, MO

Reported on 3-20 that in the most recent counts there were 1,000 Snow geese in the area during the time they counted. Staff stated that Snow geese have been on the move early this spring with the mild winter everywhere. Staff finished by saying that there are a lot of Snow geese in the area and not just on the refuge.

GRAND PASS CONSERVATION AREA – MIAMI, MO

Reported on 3-20 that in their most recent count, the counted roughly 100 Snow geese on the refuge. Staff stated that they have already seen a ton of migration but know there are still a lot of birds that need to work back through the area.

Scott reported on 3-13 that they picked up their spreads last week. He stated that they are seeing some Julie flocks come through still. Scott finished by saying that if you don’t mind sitting in the field all day not seeing much you’ll get some shooting but won’t see many birds.

Nebraska Spring Snow Goose Report

WEEKEND WEATHER OUTLOOK

In central Nebraska expect a high of 48 with a low of 25 and sunny skies with N winds at 20 to 30 mph. On Saturday expect a high of 47 with a low of 36 and partly cloudy skies and SE winds at 20 to 30 mph. Expect a high of 61 on Sunday with a low of 22 and 90% chance of rain turning into snow with SSE winds at 20 to 30 mph.

KEARNEY GAME FISH AND PARKS OFFICE- KEARNEY, NE

Reported on 3-13 that they are still seeing some Snow geese, but numbers have decreased again over the last week. Staff stated that over the last two weeks they have seen a lot of birds push through the area.

OGALLALA GAME FISH AND PARKS OFFICE – OGALLALA, NE

Reported on 3-13 that they have still been seeing some flocks of Snow geese in and around the area as well as heading further north. Staff stated that things are moving quicker this year because of the mild winter that we have had.

NORFORK GAME FISH AND PARKS OFFICE – NORFORK, NE

Reported on 3-13 that they have still have some Snow geese around the area right now considering it is still so early in the migration season. Staff stated that they are a couple weeks ahead of schedule, but with the mild temps and limited snow this winter, birds can move north quickly.

South Dakota Spring Snow Goose Report

WEEKEND WEATHER OUTLOOK

On Friday in East central South Dakota expect a high of 42 with a low of 24 and mostly cloudy skies with WNW winds at 25 to 35 mph. Saturdays high is expected to be 49 with a low of 25 and partly cloudy skies with NW winds at 10 to 20 mph. Expect a high of 58 on Sunday with a low of 40 and sunny skies with WSW winds at 10 to 15 mph.

SAND LAKE NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE – ABERDEEN, SD

Reported on 4-17 that the spring migration seems to have come to an end. Staff stated that after the winter storm a couple weeks ago the migration was full speed ahead to the North with no signs of slowing down. Staff finished by saying that there are still a few small flocks occasionally working their way through but not the huge numbers.

HURON WETLAND DISTRICT – CENTRAL, SD

Staff reported on 4-17 that the migration has wound down and they are well past peak numbers. Staff stated that over the last couple weeks the birds were pushing North hard. Staff finished by saying that it was a great spring.

MADISON COUNTRY WETLAND DISTRICT – SOUTH EAST, SD

Reported on 4-17 that they aren’t seeing much for migration anymore. Staff stated that after the weather broke a couple weeks ago, the push was on fully.

Nick reported on 4-17 that they finished up their spring season a little over a week ago. He stated that at that point the majority of birds had pushed well up into North Dakota and even into Canada. Nick finished by saying that overall, it was a great year and they were able to extend their season by a couple of weeks with the late snow storm.

North Dakota Spring Snow Goose Report

WEEKEND WEATHER OUTLOOK

On Friday in North central North Dakota expect a high of 36 and a low of 23 with overcast skies and NW winds at 20 to 30 mph. Saturdays high is expected to be 48 with a low of 27 and sunny skies with WNW winds at 10 to 20 mph. Expect a high of 56 on Sunday with a low of 32 and mostly sunny skies with W winds at 10 to 15 mph.

TEWAUKON NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE – CAYUGA, ND

Reported on 4-17 that over the last week a ton of birds have moved through the area. Staff stated that they are now past peak numbers with only a few small flocks left around in the area.

ARROWWOOD NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE – PINGREE, ND

Reported on 4-17 that over the last week numbers have decreased dramatically almost daily. Staff stated that with the nicer weather birds were moving quickly to the north.

LAKE ALICE NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE – DEVILS LAKE, ND

Reported on 4-17 that they are still seeing an ok amount of Snow geese in the area, but numbers have been declining. Staff stated that with the nice weather over the last week the migration was in full swing and moving north.

Eric reported on 4-11 that they are hunting now and they have the main mass of birds in the area. Eric stated that with the recent weather and with how warm it is expected to be this weekend he doesn’t think the birds will stick around that long.

Canada Spring Snow Goose Report

WEEKEND WEATHER OUTLOOK

On Friday in southern Saskatchewan expect a high of 33 with a low of 14 and partly cloudy skies with NNW winds at 10 to 20 mph. Saturdays high is expected to be 43 with a low of 18 and sunny skies with WSW winds at 10 to 15 mph. Expect a high of 47 on Sunday with a low of 28 and mainly sunny skies with SE wind at 10 to 15 mph.

On Friday in southern Manitoba expect a high of 33 a low of 25 and a 70% chance of snow with NW winds at 10 to 20 mph. Saturdays high is expected to be 50 with a low of 33 and partly cloudy skies with WNW winds at 10 to 15 mph. Expect a high of 53 on Sunday with a low of 31 and sunny skies with light and variable winds.

CANADIAN WILDLIFE SERVICE REPORTS

WEYBURN FIELD OFFICE – WEYBURN, SK

Reported on 4-17 that they have been seeing good numbers of Snow geese work their way through the area for over a week now. Staff stated that numbers are starting to build and they feel that by the weekend they will have really strong numbers in the area.

LAST MTN LAKE FIELD OFFICE – LAST MTN LAKE REGION

Reported on 4-17 that they have decent numbers of Snow geese around the area. Staff stated that numbers are growing and with the warmer weather expected the numbers should continue to grow over the weekend and into next week.

BOISSEVAIN FIELD OFFICE – BOISSEVAIN, MANITOBA

Reported on 4-17 that they are starting to see strong numbers of Snow geese in the area. Staff stated that birds started to arrive in the area early last week and numbers continued to build since then. Staff finished by saying that they expect numbers to be near peak by the end of the weekend.

Kris reported on 4-11 that in the last couple of days the dark geese have been showing up with a few Snow geese mixed in with them. Kris stated that he is hearing reports of the lead edge of Snow geese making it closer to his area and possibly by the end of the weekend they will be seeing them.

Brent reported on 4-17 that there are still some good feeds in and around his area. He stated that he believes the majority of the migration though is now at or past the Saskatoon area. Brent stated that it was a fast moving migration once the birds crossed the border.

Dave reported on April 4, that the first Snow geese have started to move into his area but there aren’t any significant numbers. He mentioned that they have warmed up causing some of the ice to melt and build up some sheet water. Dave finished by stating he was in Saskatoon and there was still a significant amount of snow in the open fields.
